Relevant to
Sellers of electrical goods who offer extended warranties
Took effect on
6 April 2005
From 6 April 2005, new regulations will set out how retailers should sell extended warranties for domestic electrical goods.
Under the regulations, if you sell extended warranties for domestic electrical goods (eg washing machines, televisions) you will need to:
- Display the price of the extended warranty alongside the price of the electrical goods, both in store and in any printed adverts, catalogues etc.
- Give customers details about the warranty, including their statutory and cancellation rights. If you sell them in store you should provide free information leaflets.
- Let customers know whether the warranty will be protected if you go out of business.
- Give consumers 45 days to cancel their warranty, and also send them a written reminder of this right. If they cancel it after that period they should receive a pro-rata refund.
- Allow customers to buy an extended warranty at any point up to 30 days after buying the goods. Any warranty discounts that you offer should also be available for that period.
These rules do not apply if:
- the warranty is provided for free
- the warranty does not cover repair or replacement of the goods
