ico2Blog: Government to hold consultation on legalising gay marriage

For years gay couples have campaigned for the right to have legally recognised marriages but currently same-sex couples are only permitted to enter civil partnerships, which despite offering the same legal treatment for most matters, does not allow the union to be referred to as a marriage.

Campaigners argue that denying same-sex couples the same privileges and rights as other couples is "homophobic discrimination". But early next year, the Government will hold a consultation on changing the laws for same-sex couples.

ico9Community: Pregnant tier 4 foreign student

Question: I'm a pregnant foreign student under tier 4. Will my baby be a British citizen if I give birth in the UK? Or will I be forced to go home to have the baby?

Answer: The child’s immigration status will hinge on that of its parents. Unless one of you has British citizenship or indefinite leave to remain in the UK, the child will not qualify as a UK citizen when he or she is born. Provided you comply with the terms of your visa, however, you will not be forced to return home to give birth. Visit the following pages to learn more: (1) Student Visas; (2) Citizenship.
